A little bit of River Relay history…

 Return to Main page

The relay was first organised by the now almost defunct Feltham Puffers. Although the race had a healthy field of teams in the early 1990’s it gradually declined to became a name and a route to be discussed over a beer or two.

The course of the relay however happens to pass both the Straggler’s Kingston base and the home-town of the Staines Strollers. Roy Miller, as a member of both clubs, thought that there was a gap in the September diary and suggested that it would be a good idea to resurrect the race. After a few words with the Puffers they passed it over.

It's pretty much the same event - a relay from Virginia Water in six stages with a finish in Kingston rather than Old Deer Park in Richmond.

If the first race of the revised relay was a mob match Strollers won hands down - they had four teams to the Straggler's one. However the Straggler's had the faster team and won the inaugural race.

In 1999 5 teams from the 2 clubs raced a combined 140 miles and raised £75 for Arthritis Research.

By 2004 the race had attracted enough clubs to raise, over £1,500 for charity.
