Stragglers XC Championships 2016/17

Posted by Alan Mawdsley on 6 March 2017

The Ellis and Dysart Cup competition on Saturday 4th March marked the end of the Stragglers Cross Country season being the 8th event in the championship series.

Awards are given to participating runners in the following categories:

Men: Overall Winner, SM, M40, M50, M60 and Hero

and for the Ladies: Overall Winner, SL, F35, F45, F55 and Hero award.

To be eligible for an award, runners must have completed at least four of the eight qualifying events.

The scores have been added up and checked and we are now pleased to announce the winners of the season:

Men

Rob Wilcox: Senior man

Simon Ford: M40

Roy Reeder: M50

Peter Wedderburn: M60

Gareth Pritchard: Hero award

Overall Winner: Rob Wilcox with 140 points

In total an astounding 72 men took part in one or more qualifying event this season with 26 men completing four or more races to be eligible for an award.  There was a  huge amount of commitment to running and representing the club this season.  In particular we would like to acknowledge the four men that completed all eight of the qualifying events, Matthew Parker, Malcolm Fletcher, Roy Reeder and Gareth Pritchard.  Roy having won the  M 50 award was not eligible for the hero prize and under the rules of the competition Gareth pipped Malcolm and Matt to the award having scored the most points.

 Ladies

 Tiffany Gibson: Senior lady

Sarah Winter: F35

Juliet Cleghorn: F45

Julie Haworth: F55

Karen Levene: Hero award

Overall winner: Sarah Winter with 139 points

In total a hugely impressive 48 ladies ran in one or more qualifying event this season with 14 ladies completing four or more races to be eligible for an award, and in the process propelling the ladies team into Division 1 of the Surrey League.  There was particularly tight competition in the ladies club championship in particular Julie Haworth and Ramona Thevenet being tied on 117 points for the F55 award.  Under the rules of the competition Julie and Ramona could only be separated on a count of their five best events.

Karen Levene scored a nearly 'full house' having completed 7 out of 8 qualifying events to scoop the hero award.  Her consistently high performances  and support certainly made her a very worthy hero, and she was 2nd in the overall competition.  A special mention goes to Tiff Gibson as she had secured the senior ladies prize before jetting off to a new life in Canada on Christmas Day and no one managed to catch her!

Once again, thank you all for running and supporting and a full report of the cross country season will appear in March edition of Stragg Mag.
