Summer GP and Towpath 10

Posted by Alan Mawdsley on 10 February 2019

For 2019, Stragglers are planning some slight revisions to the successful Summer Grand Prix. Andy Howarth has stepped forward to be this year's Summer Grand Prix Captain and he has been working with the Committee on developing the series of races. The aim is to have something for everyone, with a set of parkrun based mobmatches as well as including a half-marathon, a 10 miler - the Thames Towpath 10 - 3 x 10ks  as well as other familiar events making 12 events in total.

The points scoring system will remain the same as last year with 10 points awarded for taking part in each event and an additional 1-25 points available for the first 25 finishers in each event. So you can score a maximum 35 points in any event. At the end of the year your 4 best scores in races are totalled for your overall score. There are separate men's and women's competitions and awards for a range of age categories as well as the highest age gradings in any race and hero awards for the most events run.

The full Summer Grand Prix Programme is currently being finalised for agreement by the Club Committee later this month. But in advance of that Andy wants to let everyone know that the first race in the Grand Prix is planned to be the Thames Towpath 10 on Sunday 14 April.

This 10 mile race starts near Kew and follows the towpath! It is flat and fast and we think makes a good introduction to the Summer Grand Prix being just 2 weeks before the London Marathon.  The Club has agreed to offer 30 FREE PLACES to the first 30 Stragglers that let Andy know they would like to compete in this race. It is expected that this race will also be the Stragglers Championship Race for 10 miles (confirmation to follow). Contact andy.howarth@stragglers.org if interested. Further details of the full 2019 Summer Grand Prix will be announced later this month.
