From the Cabbage Patch to the Olympics

We welcomed a very special guest to Bushy Park Sports Club on Friday 25 September, when former Olympian and British distance-running star Richard Nerurkar joined members to share stories from his remarkable running career.

The evening also marked the unofficial launch of this year’s Cabbage Patch 10, with representatives from the charities supported by the race joining Stragglers members for an evening celebrating running, community and the history of one of the area’s best-loved races.

Richard shared the story of his journey from being inspired by two enthusiastic teachers at school to joining Bingley Harriers, where his talent developed and his ambitions grew. That journey would ultimately take him to the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996.

He also recalled his memorable appearance at the Cabbage Patch 10 in 1993, when he ran an astonishing 46:02, spurred on by the increasing excitement of the lead cyclist. The time became the European 10-mile record and remained unbeaten for almost 30 years, until Emile Cairess ran 45:57 in 2023. However, Richard’s 46:02 remains the Cabbage Patch 10 course record to this day.

Richard spoke about the people and experiences that shaped his career, from his early days as a club runner through to competing at the highest level of international athletics. He then took questions from Stragglers members, covering everything from his career and how he enjoys running today to training for a sub-three-hour marathon and the future of British distance running.
