Keen Stragglers brave Artic cold
A keen bunch of Stragglers braved Artic conditions this weekend to compete in the Surrey XC Championships at Denbies and the Tadworth 10. Sarah Holt was the first Straggler woman to finish at Denbies crossing the line in 7th, while Donovan Duffy was the club's fastest man in 114th position. Cabbage Patch 4 sees a record crowd
The annual Boxing Day Cabbage Patch 4 attracted a record turnout with 157 runners participating, many of them Stragglers but joined also by family, friends and members of other local clubs including 26.2 and Bearcats. XC die-hards take on SOT
The proximity of Christmas didn't defer a group of XC enthusiasts heading to Wimbledon at the weekend for the South of Thames 7.5 mile championship race. Pavel Przepiorski was the club's fastest finisher, coming in 76th in a time of 49:02. James Bowell was second fastest man in 50:39. Christmas pub crawl heads to Twickenham
This Friday the annual Stragglers pub crawl kicks off at 7pm at Brouge in Twickenham. All six pubs on the route are in and around Twickenham with the final stop at 10:15pm at the Sussex Arms. All members are welcome and can join from the start at Brouge or at any of subsequent stops. Festive attire is encouraged.

Podium performances at Middlesex XC
A small group of Middlesex-based Stragglers competed in the country's XC championships in Hillingdon, and produced some excellent performances. Nic Douglas won the women's race in 31:13 and Sophie Biggs was third in 31:46. Pete Gregorowski was our fastest man finishing 33rd in 46:16. Julie Haworth finished 49th in the women's event (42:02) while Chrissie Glew was 68th (55:37), enabling the team to finish third in the event for teams who haven't made the podium in the past

A weekend of weather extremes
Six Stragglers headed to Valencia for some winter sun and the last major marathon this year. Sarah Holt was the first Straggler to finish in 2:40:24 which gave her fourth position in her age group. Lisa Bailey wasn’t far behind finishing 2:46:24 and seventh in the same age group. Sam Hawthorn finished in under three hours in 2:57:26 followed by Freysan Maritz in 3:06:20. If you're looking for to raise your alcohol tolerance before Christmas Day, the club's annual Christmas pub crawl on Friday 19 December should be in your calendar. Nic and Sophie podium in Horsenden
Nic Douglas and Sophie Biggs produced superb performances to finish second and third overall in the South of England Masters XC in Horsenden on Saturday. Nic was the first Straggler to finish in the 6k woman's race with a time of 23:10 which also earnt her silver in V40. Sophie finished close behind her in 23:50 and won gold in V50. Awards night caps a stellar year
There was plenty to cheer on Friday night when members of the club gathered for the annual awards night. As well as presenting the prizes for both the winter and summer grand prix, chair Kevin and club captains Helen and Simon, handed awards to the most improved runners, and everyone celebrated the outcomes of key races including the club 10k and the handicap series. Stragglers head South of the Thames
Despite a forrecast of heavy rain, two dozen or so Stragglers headed to Croydon's Lloyd Park this weekend for the South of the Thames 5 mile/ 8km XC race. Pavel Przepiorski was the first club member to finish with a time of 31:07 which gave him 33rd place, and was followed by Alistair Hall and Austin Molnar. Glady Gartland was the fastest woman in 37:19 and 19th place, followed very closely by Becca Gravell and Tracey Lenthall both of whom finished within 37:40.

Stragglers shrug off storm warnings for Brighton 10k
While many in the club were at the Surrey League XC second match, a hardy group of fast runners headed to Brighton, ignoring bad weather warnings as Storm Claudia wreaked havoc in the north of the country. Their efforts were rewarded with some excellent times. Leading the way was Pam Whitter who won her age group with a time of 43:47 which was also within the England Masters qualification time. Solid performances at Surrey XC
Fears that Storm Claudia could deliver treacherous conditions to the weekend Surrey League XC fixtures proved unfounded, and both teams produced solid performances. The women competing in division 1, in Beckenham Place Park, finished 11th with Nic Douglas our first finisher in 34th, with a time of 22:02, followed by Sophie Biggs and Lucy Chambers. Running the numbers in South Downs
While the rest of the club decided 4k of climb at the Leatherhead 10k was enough for them this weekend, Sophie Biggs and Malcolm Calder opted for something a little more challenging. Both competed in a trails event in West Sussex. Sophie was first female in the 5 trails ultra (50k), finishing 5th overall in 4:54:01, while Malcolm finished 19th in the 3 trails half marathon with a time of 1:58:30. Stragglers tackle Parliament Hill
Nine brave Stragglers tackled the notorious Parliament Hill course for Saturday's London XC championships. Alistair Hall was the fastest finisher from the club completing the 10k course in 43:03, followed by Steve Clelland (50:38) and Gareth Pritchard (51:59). Katrin Metcalfe and Lynda Chase were the only Stragglers competing in the women's 6k race and finished in 30:45 and 43:09 respectively. Stragglers tackle NYC in Abbott pursuit
Stragglers headed for the Big Apple last weekend to compete in the New York marathon and clock up another one of the Abbott six major marathons. Denis Mustafa came home with two medals having completed his Abbott challenge when he finished in 3:56:07. Ian Robertson and Alex Mason both have one more of the six to complete, New York having been their fifth major. Ian finished in 4:42:46 having had to walk a lot of it after feeling sick. Women retain Priory relays title
Our women retained their title as fastest women at the Reigate Priory relays on Saturday. The team of Lisa Baily, Nic Douglas, Lucy Chambers and Sophie Biggs took the team prize after finishing in a time of 1:06:57 and 10th overall. They were almost five minutes ahead of second-placed Crawley AC. Lisa was fastest woman (25th overall) and Nic second fastest. The B team finished 6th in 1:21:44 while the men's team were 19th in their event in 1:21:58.

Putting parkrunners through their paces
Stragglers helped Bushy parkrun offer an additional pacing week with 16 club members pacing every minute from 20 to 35 on Saturday. Chance heads for the hills
While many of the club were pushing themselves on local circuits, Chance Rowan travelled to Wales to race this weekend, choosing Marathon Eryri in the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Chance completed the race which takes in the Llanberis Pass in 3:46:43. Closer to home nine Stragglers raced at the Surrey Masters XC in Nonsuch Park. Merilyn wins Masters marathon bronze
Merilyn Davis won a British Master bronze in her age group at the Abingdon Marathon last weekend. Merilyn has run over 100 marathons and Abingdon was her third this year. She finished in 3:52:49. Lisa Bailey also qualified for the event but was unable to run on the day.

Awards night celebrates junior talent
We celebrated our junior runners who participated in this summer's series of handicap races last week. William Gregory was overall winner, with Evie Beandeira finishing second and Tilly Gregory third. Georgina Warner won the Minis series while Maddie Kirk was second.
