Last weekend it was time for the club's annual trip to Wales to participate in the Welsh Castes Relay as our 20 runners plus their rhyfeddol (amazing) organisers Robert and Heather Hodge headed to Caernarfon for the 2-day, 20-stage race. The team finished 44th out of 65 teams in a time of 24:33:35 - the club’s best time since 2019. Lisa Bailey produced a season’s best representing England Masters at this weekend’s Swansea Half. Lisa finished first in VW45 and 10th overall in 77:22. She is second in Uk rankings for VW45 in the HM behind our own Sarah Holt.

Over 70 Stragglers competed in the second of the 5k handicap series on Thursday with Denis Mustafa crossing the line first. Pavel Przepiorski was the fastest runner in the Open category, finishing in 17:34 while Phuong Hoang was fastest woman in 20:20. After two events Jess Saulet leads the rankings with 35 points but there are still three more events, with scores based on the best three results. The next handicap is on Thursday 2 July.

There were some strong performances at mid-week races on Wedneday. A large crowd of Stragglers competed at the Wimbledon Trails race which was a Summer Grand Prix event. Alistair Hall was our first finisher in 14th position with a time 30:11 while Sophie Biggs was our fastest woman and third overall in a time of 33:15. Sophie won her age group - VW50 - and her time gave her a mighty 90.58% age grading. Patricia Ronksley won VW60 while Chrissie Glew took the VW70 title. S

The club hosted its first ever Open Day at the weekend, inviting members and local residents to take part in a group run and meet with some local running specialists including experts in biomechanics and gait analysis, to yoga for runners, sports massage and running-focused PTs. Stragglers women tackled some of Cornwall’s challenging coastal paths in last weekend’s The Trail Pursuit St. Agnes Trail Runs. Pamela McHutchon and Leoni Thomas completed the half marathon distance while Jo Newstead and Carol Sloan ran the 10k and Chrissie Glew did the 5k. Along with a friend Fran, had a fantastic weekend running in stunning scenery and by the looks of it, good weather.

While many Stragglers were taking easy or at least running a little slower in the heat, some of our warrior women were taking it on and racing this weekend. Our Stage 22 runners in the Green Belt Relay finished strongly, capping a weekend of good performances and excellent planning by Josh Ingold and his team captains. Oli Bowers finished 4th, Freysen Maritz was 10th and Lucy Chambers finished in 18th. Stragglers had a good day at the Green Belt relay on Saturday with our Open Men's team finishing the first 11 stages in 8th position overall and 4th in their category, while the Women were 3rd in the category and the Super Vets were 2nd. Chance Rowan travelled to Leeds for his 26.2 mile challenge, completing the Rob Burrows marathon in 3:23:49.

Pam Whitter and Harri Daniel represented England in the international 10K at Bideford on Sunday. Pam was second in FV65, finishing in 44:45 while Harri was sixth in FV45 in a time of 40:08. It was a challenging course , with both wind and hills to contend with on the main road out and then back on the scenic Tarka Trail . Congratulations to both.

Lisa Bailey retained her title as first woman at the Ranleagh Half Marathon, taking nearly two minutes off her 2025 winning time. Lisa finished in 23rd place in a time of 78:31. Simon Mumme was our first finisher in 16th position and 77:14. The event was doubling up as the Surrey Half Marathon Championships, meaning Lisa also took that title and won her age group in the county championships. Our summer handicap series started on Thursday and almost broke the record for participation with 87 runners completing the 5k. Heather Hodge was the overall winner, finishing in a time of 30:16, followed by Wing Chung Kwan and Lynton Nicholson. Lisa Bailey was fastest woman, flying round the course in 16:58 while Oli Bowers took the prize in the Open category with a time of 16:48. Alex Willson was also a winner having predicted his finishing time exactly.

There was age-group glory for Stragglers racing in the first of the Wimbledon Trail Series. Donovan Duffy won MV50, finishing in 32:43, while Sophie Biggs finished as third woman and won WV50 in a time of 32:51. Andrew Roberts was also a winner taking MV60 in 34:47. Warm weather created challenging conditions for our weekend racers. Jo Taman travelled to Southampton to complete the half marathon and finished as 31st woman in a time of 1:45:19. The race was a warm up for the marathon distance which Jo will be tackling in Cape Town. There were 31 Stragglers (that we know of) running the streets of London yesterday, giving those who went up to support, a steady stream of yellow vests to cheer. Leading the pack was Sarah Holt who set a new PB of 2:37:46, finished 12th among the women at the mass start and won her age group. Our latest Couch to 5k programme opened on Tuesday with a great turnout - 27 out of the 37 who had registered for the 8-week course. And almost half of them turned up for the second session on Thursday at Bushy Park Sports Club, which doesn't always happen due to the distance between the two locations. The Summer Grand Prix continued this weekend with a sunny Sutton 10k acting as the second event in the series, attracting a big, yellow crowd as 26 members competed. Oli Bowers wiped more than 10 minutes off his marathon PB at Newport this weekend, finishing 7th in 2:29:18. Five Stragglers travelled to Wales for their Spring marathon. While some of our members were completing the Brighton Marathon on the roads this Sunday, Sophie Biggs was tackling the Trail version. Sophie finished second despite breaking her hand in a fall half way round the course. She still finished in a time of 3:46.
