Sophie Biggs was back on top of the podium this weekend having won the Beat Box Hill 50k trails race. Sophie finished 6th overall in a time of 5:03:31. Closer to home, four Stragglers raced the Hampton Court Half with Aaron Israel the first to finish in 88:31, followed by Rob Corlett (1:42:53), Katie Sheppard (2:04:39) and Rachel Glaysher (2:09:55). And Matthew Berry ran the Royal Parks Half in 96:09.

There was a strong turnout for both Surrey League XC races on Saturday. Twenty one women raced at Wimbledon where the A team finished 5th while the B team were 10th. At Reigate 29 men raced and the A team were 7th while the B team were 6th. At Wimbledon Sarah Holt led the team home, finishing 9th, followed by Lisa Bailey (14th) and Eliza Hawthorn (43rd). While 20+ club members trod some familiar paths at this weekend's Kingston Half, Jim Desmond and Ted Fraser went for something a little bit more exotic. The pair completed the Logrono Marathon in Northern Spain, with Jim finishing in 3:15:58 and Ted in 3:44:19. Pamela McHutchon made her England debut last weekend, competing for England Masters vs their Welsh counterparts in the Forest of Dean Half. Pamela completed the challenging trails course in 1:56:24 finishing fifth in her age group.

After a summer spent racing shorter distances, a large number of club members returned to half and full marathon competition this weekend. Nearly 40 Stragglers competed at the club's XC championship at West End common in Esher, and for some it was their second race of the weekend following the SEAA road relays on Saturday. Pavel Przepiorski who was first finisher in a time of 25:39 did both events, as did three more of the first five finishers - Oll Bowers, Austin Molnar and Angus Beaumont. The SEAA road relays kicked off a busy weekend of racing for Stragglers. The club fielded two women's teams and three men's teams at the event in Aldershot. Stragglers A consisting of Lisa Bailey, Sarah Holt, Sarah Palmer and Sophie Biggs finished 9th in a time of 88:14, while Stragglers B - Lucy Chambers, Louise Lancaster and Lucy Hoseason finished 48th. Some Stragglers treated themselves to a little bit of Danish this weekend, travelling to Copenhagen for the city's half marathon. As some of you may have heard, there was an incident at last weekend’s Round Norfolk Relay as a result of which it was decided that the team would not complete the event. Martin Vivian who was accompanying one of the runners, was knocked off his bike and is now recuperating after some hospital treatment. As the kids returned to school after the long, hot summer, it was back to racing for a number of members this weekend. Six Stragglers travelled to Newcastle for the Great North Run. Lex Prince was the first to finish in 97:57, followed by Steve Baller (1:48:53) and Scott Singleton (1:48:59). Tim Ferguson and Oscar Murphy completed this weekend's Big Half, pounding the capital's streets alongside each other. With pretty much of the rest of club running, supporting or volunteering somewhere between Boveney and BPSC, the pair decided to support eachother during the race and finished just 45 seconds apart. Oscar finished first in 1:56:06 while Tim crossed the line in 1:56:50.

The weekend saw the club deliver another successful annual event as 63 teams completed the River Relay. ERR & RAN Wombats were the first team home in a time of 2:45:38. Phoebe Law made the podium in her first half Ironman triathlon, having been the fastest competitor in the run segment. Phoebe who was competing in the Wimbleball Lake Triathlon, finished 3rd woman and 20th overall in a time of 6:04:10. On the other side of the world, Stragglers were competing in the Sydney marathon. Lisa Bailey and Pavel Przepiorski have won the Summer Grand Prix, both having almost scored maximum points in their best six events. Lisa was one point short of the maximum 210 points having finished behind Sarah Holt in the final event, the club 10k, while Pavel scored 208. After postponments due to the summer heat, the club 10k finally happened on Thursday night although an unexpected closure of Kingston Bridge caused travel problems for a number of participants. Last Thursday’s Memorial relays was our final summer tourism event with over 100 runners participating despite the extraordinary heat.
